Lachit Borphukan APK - Lachit Barphukan's 400th birthday is being celebrated by the government of Assam. We made an effort to honor this great national hero in this way.

In the late 1600s, Lachit Borphukan led the army of the Ahom Kingdom in successfully resisting the imperial expansion of the Mughal Empire.

Despite insurmountable odds, he is remembered for his bravery and leadership.

The purpose of this article is to provide information about Lachit Borphukan within the context of the Civil Services Exam.

Lachit Borphukan's background

On 24 November 1622, Lachit Borphukan was born to Momai Tamuli Borbarua and Kunti Moran. The Ahom army was commanded by his father. Ahom was an Indian kingdom in the Brahmaputra valley. Founded in 1228, it has been around ever since. Turkic and Afghan rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire repeatedly attacked the kingdom

The ahom-Mughal conflict began in 1615 and lasted for several years. This was the backdrop in which Lachit grew up. Lachit was assigned the role of Soladhara Barua (scarf-bearer) after completing his education in humanities and military strategies. In addition to his position as commander of the Ahom Army, he held other important positions such as Superintendent of the Stable of Royal Horses and Superintendent of the Royal Household Guards.

At the time Lachit Borphukan was appointed commander, the Mughals had occupied Guwahati and forced the Ahoms to sign the humiliating Treaty of Ghilajharighat in 1663, which imposed harsh conditions on the Ahoms. As part of King Chakradhwaj Singha's will, Lachit Borphukan would rid the entire region of Mughal rule.

Battle of Saraighat

During the summer of 1667, Lachit raised the army and completed preparations. Guwahati was successfully retaken by his army from the Mughal forces. In response to the defeat at Guwahati, Emperor Aurangzeb (born November 3, 1618) sent an expeditionary force from Dhaka under Ram Singh. Lachit used guerilla tactics to defeat the Mughal army since the Ahom forces were numerically and technologically inferior.

Ram Singh, well aware that removing the Ahom commander would lead to easy defeat, resorted to subterfuge. Ahom Camp was attacked by an arrow carrying a letter by Ram Sing. Chakradhwaj Singha received it later. Lachit was paid 1 lakh rupees to evacuate Guwahati, according to the letter. Furious that his commander was allegedly in negotiations with the enemy, the king started doubting his sincerity, but his prime minister Atan Buragohain convinced him that this was a trick by the Mughals to make Chakradwaj Singh dismiss the commander who successfully fought the Mughals so far.

Having exhausted all other options, Ram Singh sailed up the Brahmaputra river in 1671 to reach Guhawati. At Saraighat, he encountered a flotilla of Ahom led by Lachit Borphukan. In open space once again, the Ahom soldiers began to lose the will to fight due to their overwhelming numbers and outgunned weapons. Lachit noticed some elements retreating and boarded a boat to rally them. Although he was severely ill, Lachit furiously threw some of his troops into the water bodily despite being offered safety by one of his troops, claiming that he would die doing what was right for his king and country, even if it meant doing it alone. As a result, Lachit's soldiers rallied and a desperate battle ensued on the Brahmaputra river.

The legacy of Lachit Borphukan

The Battle of Saraighat and the heroism of Lachit Borphukan are commemorated each year on 24 November by the celebration of Lachit Divas in Assam.

Assam celebrates Lachit Divas to honor the legendary general Lachit Borphukan.

Lachit Borphukan gold medals are awarded to the best cadets at the National Defence Academy. A general VP Malik announced the medal in 1999, saying it would inspire defence personnel to emulate Barphukan's heroism.
