Just ask Rebecca Wachtel, who was in charge of the makeup department for Daisy Jones and The Six. She brought the 1970s-inspired rock 'n' roll show on Prime Video to life with looks that showed the highs and lows of the fake band.
In an interview with E! News, Rebecca said, "Makeup is a big deal." "It makes a picture."
For example, Riley Keough plays Daisy Jones, who goes through the biggest change as fame eats her up and spits her out. Rebecca paints a picture of what the rock star is going through by using certain eyeshadow colors and skincare items.
The makeup artist said, "She has a fresh face and looks like she's been out in the sun. She has that '70s vibe." "But then she starts to get popular, and she starts to wear a little more makeup. We do a lot of different things to show her change from being crazy and on drugs. And when she goes all the way, she gets dirty and wears a lot of makeup. This isn't the Daisy we know."
Rebecca said that seeing Daisy go from wearing natural, relaxed makeup to putting on thick layers of makeup to hide her pale skin shows "the arc of what she goes through until she goes too far."
"She starts with warmer-toned eyeshadows on her face and warm colors on her cheeks," she said. "When she starts to lose control, I start to take away the color by using cooler-toned eyeshadows, and I let some of her natural circles show."
Daisy's change to more dramatic, heavy makeup also helped tell another story: that a new beauty age was starting.
Rebecca said, "As she moves into this space, it's getting to be the late 1970s." "That's when we think of the 1980s because of the big, bright colors, so it was a good time to hint at what was to come. They are the rock stars and set the style."
